WalletConnect

WalletConnect is an open protocol that lets a mobile crypto wallet sign transactions requested by a desktop dApp — a QR code links the session, and the mobile wallet holds the keys while the desktop constructs and requests each transaction.

WalletConnect is an open standard for connecting mobile wallets to desktop dApps without ever exposing private keys to the desktop machine. The flow: a desktop dApp displays a QR code, the mobile wallet scans it, and a secure session opens between them. When the dApp needs a transaction signed, it sends the request over that session; the mobile wallet displays the details on-device, the user approves, and the signed transaction goes back.

The value proposition is a hardware-wallet-style separation of trust between the "screen showing the transaction" and the "device holding the keys" — even for people using software wallets. If the desktop machine is compromised, the attacker cannot silently drain the wallet because signing requires interaction on the mobile device.

WalletConnect is now supported by virtually every major dApp and mobile wallet. The user experience is roughly: click "Connect Wallet" on any dApp, choose WalletConnect, scan the QR with your mobile wallet, approve.
